Lead Python Software Engineer

The role

A senior engineer who can drive the development of innovative fintech solutions that make financial services more accessible across Africa. You'll lead technical decisions, mentor a small but growing team, and help build scalable systems that power our insurance, telecoms and payments products.

This is a hands-on role with strategic impact in a fast-moving, low-legacy environment.

What you'll get to do

You'll define how Asuer builds: coding standards, architecture, test culture, deployment practice, while still spending most of your week shipping. You'll own the API surface that powers the chatbot, ERP integrations, and customer-facing services across Insure, Connect and (soon) Transact.

Responsibilities

• Designing and building scalable Python services that power our fintech products.
• Setting and enforcing engineering standards: code quality, testing, CI/CD, observability.
• Leading architecture decisions across services, data layers and integrations.
• Mentoring engineers (initially 2–4) through pairing, code review and technical career growth.
• Owning incident response and post-mortem culture for production systems.
• Collaborating with product, data and design to translate business problems into technical solutions.
• Hiring and onboarding engineers as the team scales.

Our requirements include

Technical skills in:

• Python 3.11+, FastAPI / Django
• PostgreSQL, Redis
• Docker, Kubernetes / managed container platforms
• AWS or Google Cloud
• CI/CD (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI)

Must be able to:

• Lead a team of engineers without becoming the bottleneck.
• Make pragmatic architecture trade-offs in a fast-moving startup.
• Write clear technical documentation.
• Communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Knowledge & experience:

• 7+ years building production Python systems
• 3+ years in a senior or lead engineering role
• Experience in fintech, telecoms or regulated industries (preferred)
• Proven record of mentoring engineers

Prerequisites:

• South African work authorisation
• Willingness to be in our Bryanston office 3 days a week
