Data Scientist

The role

A Senior, full-stack Data Scientist who can move comfortably between data engineering and data analysis. You'll build the pipelines you need, surface the dashboards the business reads every morning, and turn questions about customers, claims and network usage into answers leadership can act on.

This is a builder's role, five-plus years of doing both is essential.

What you'll get to do

You'll work across the stack: writing Python and SQL to extract and shape data, modelling in PostgreSQL, orchestrating with Airflow, Prefect or Dagster, and shipping reports and dashboards in QuickSight (or equivalent). You'll define metrics, interpret data using existing models, and partner with product, ops and risk to make better calls.

We don't use the Microsoft stack. Cloud is GCP, AWS or equivalent. Pandas, Matplotlib and Jupyter Notebooks are your daily tools.

Responsibilities

• Owning data work end-to-end, ingestion, modelling, dashboards, reports.
• Building and operating pipelines on Python, SQL, PostgreSQL and a modern orchestrator (Airflow / Prefect / Dagster).
• Designing reports and BI dashboards in QuickSight (or similar) that the business actually uses.
• Interpreting data with existing models to answer real questions about customers, claims and network usage.
• Defining metrics and partnering across product, ops and risk on what to measure.
• Documenting decisions, methodology and edge cases so others can replicate the work.

Our requirements include

Technical skills in:

• High level of SQL proficiency
• Python (Pandas, Matplotlib)
• PostgreSQL
• Orchestration: Airflow, Prefect or Dagster
• Cloud: some experience with GCP, AWS or equivalent (not Microsoft stack)
• QuickSight or equivalent BI tooling
• Excel
• AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or similar)
• Jupyter Notebooks

Must be able to:

• Move between engineering, analysis and reporting fluently.
• Choose the simplest approach that solves the problem.
• Write findings up in clear plain language for executives.

Knowledge & experience:

• Senior seniority, minimum 5 years across data engineering and analytics.
• Strong portfolio of dashboards and pipelines in production.

Prerequisites:

• South African work authorisation.
• Tertiary qualification in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics & Statistics, or Actuarial Science. WITS, TUKS/UP, UCT or Stellenbosch preferred.
