Data Engineer

The role

A Senior Data Engineer to design, build and own the data pipelines that power Asuer's insurance, telecoms, and soon, payments, businesses. You'll be the foundation our analysts, scientists and business teams build on top of.

If you've spent five-plus years shipping production data systems and want to build a modern data stack from the ground up, this is for you.

What you'll get to do

You'll own ingestion, orchestration and modelling end-to-end, moving customer, policy, claims and network usage data through clean pipelines that feed dashboards, reports and (eventually) ML systems.

You'll work in Python and SQL on PostgreSQL, orchestrate with Airflow, Prefect or Dagster, and operate on cloud platforms (GCP, AWS or equivalent, we don't use the Microsoft stack). Pandas, Matplotlib and Jupyter Notebooks are your daily tools. You'll partner closely with the Data Analyst and Data Scientist to deliver the data layer the business actually trusts.

Responsibilities

• Designing, building and owning Asuer's data pipelines end-to-end.
• Modelling our data warehouse on PostgreSQL.
• Orchestrating workloads with Airflow, Prefect or Dagster.
• Operating cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS or equivalent).
• Building clean ingestion from our ERP (Odoo) and other operational systems.
• Partnering with the Data Analyst and Data Scientist on the data layer they depend on.
• Documenting data sources, lineage, transformations and assumptions.
• Ensuring data integrity, security and version control throughout.

Our requirements include

Technical skills in:

• High level of SQL proficiency
• Python (Pandas, Matplotlib)
• PostgreSQL
• Orchestration: Airflow, Prefect or Dagster
• Cloud: some experience with GCP, AWS or equivalent (not Microsoft stack)
• Excel
• AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or similar)
• Jupyter Notebooks

Must be able to:

• Translate vague business questions into clean datasets and reliable pipelines.
• Document data sources, lineage and assumptions so others can self-serve.
• Communicate clearly with both engineers and business stakeholders.

Knowledge & experience:

• Senior seniority, minimum 5 years as a Data Engineer or Analytics Engineer.
• Track record of building data pipelines in a production environment.
• Comfortable in a small team with high autonomy.

Prerequisites:

• South African work authorisation.
• Tertiary qualification in Engineering or Computer Science. WITS, TUKS/UP, UCT or Stellenbosch preferred.
